Beyond the Symptom

These Family Constellation workshops will be offered focusing on the connection

between unresolved trauma and chronic illness as we look beyond the symptom.

In 30 years as a doctor, I have come to appreciate the significant role that unresolved

intergenerational trauma can have on a patient. I have seen how the absence of people

who have been forgotten, excluded or unacknowledged within the family system, can

show up as being connected to all types of symptoms presenting in the current

generation.

Unconscious identifications or entanglements with the difficult fates of others who

came before us, can bring about physiological and emotional processes that can lead

on to chronic illnesses. These can sometimes be resistant to standard therapeutic

interventions, in other words, from a systemic perspective, such illnesses can represent

a blind loyalty within a family system which is out of our awareness.

The work

 The hidden dynamics operating in the client’s system that have caused the flow of love

to be disturbed, can emerge in Constellation work through the phenomenological

methodology and what Hellinger called ‘the knowing field’.

Healing can happen at many levels when the dynamics that have been at play in a

family system come to light. it often becomes clear that we have been ‘entangled’ and

‘identified’ in an ancestor’s fate and have been carrying what does not belong to us.

When this is recognized and acknowledged, when we can honor the fate of those who

came before us and include the excluded, when things are left where they belong, then

a healing movement can be set in motion.

This process of restoring order, balance and the flow of love within the family system

can free us from blind loyalties and enable us to see the role that loyalty and

entanglements may have played in our lives and shown up as symptoms and illnesses.

I have witnessed many dramatic physical and emotional shifts within clients as a

consequence of this beautiful work and while the client may need further support while

integrating these shifts, subsequent therapeutic interventions tend to yield more

positive results.

In this way, I have found that systemic Family Constellations can be a powerful adjunct

to the standard medical approach…and vice versa

The experience of the group

During the constellation work, you may be a client, a representative in a client’s

constellation (optional) or sitting in the ‘holding circle’ as the Knowing field opens, this

is not a passive role as the whole group sits ‘in service to life’. As the work unfolds,

your own personal issues may be touched in a profound way when you experience

how love that was shut down can flow again.
